Students at VTS are actively working on these projects and would love your help to continue them throughout this school year and next.
Mobile Raised Beds: these raised beds are on wheels so that they can be moved closer to the gardening enthusiasm. Contact Joe Hubbard for more information. Currently the raised beds have tomatoes, peppers, beans, squash, basil, mint, and a fig tree.
Compost Tumblrs: apartment and dorm dwellers can contribute to the gardens by composting their yard waste. Gwinn Chrichton has spearheaded this project. See the pdf reference sheets for instruction on how and what can be composted. Each composting ecosystem is different, so if you have been accustomed to composting before, these instructions may have different procedures.
Container Gardens: you don’t have to have a large plot of land to start a garden. You can grow vegetables in containers on a patio or balcony! Contact Josh Paget for tips and tricks for container gardening at VTS.
Eco-Transportation: 43% of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) in the Greater DC area come from transportation. Learn how you can be a green commuter while at VTS by contacting Josh Paget.
Honey Bees: We have two bee colonies and we are hoping to expand in the coming years. (200,000 for the 200th Birthday of VTS!) In the fall we will need help doing a honey harvest! We also need volunteers to help with the maintenance and treating of the hives. If you are excited to learn about Contact Ashley Hubbard for more info.
